    IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor
The IntelliCarb™ Compensating Carburetor is designed to automatically adjust the air/fuel ratio when the air filter becomes restricted or partially clogged and maintains the engine’s correct RPM. IntelliCarb™ uses air from the clean side of the air filter to control the diaphragm and flow of fuel. As the air filter becomes dirty and less air is available for the carburetor, the IntelliCarb™ system adjusts the fuel flow to compensate for the decrease in air flow. This is in contrast to typical carburetors that utilize this air from the “dirty” side of the air box.

    Ematic™ Lubrication System
The Ematic™ guide bar, when used with STIHL OILOMATIC® saw chain, will provide proper lubrication and less oil consumption than conventional methods. The system works because two ramps, strategically placed in the guide bar rail, help contain the flow of oil and direct all lubrication to the sliding faces of the bar and chain links as well as the rivets and driver holes, which in turn can reduce bar oil consumption up to 50%.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Terrible inferior cheap waste of money product I hate this chainsaw, even for homeowner use. I wanted a higher end model but my tool budget was quickly dismissed. This chainsaw is very difficult to start and seems extremely flimsy. Because it is so flimsy, some of the controls become engaged too easily upon startup. This chainsaw is also extremely under-powered. It didn't go through moderately sized tree limbs easily. I strongly recommend researching other models. If you are convinced that you need this particular model, buy an electric chainsaw instead. Extremely frustrated with this product and I have to question what type of applications are other homeowners using this chainsaw as I find it to be completely useless. It definitely is one of the worst tools I have ever purchased. I feel like chucking it in the trash and buying a higher grade tool. In using this product, the chain binded up. I loosened the chain guard to check if some brush became stuck in the drive motor and of course the nut rolled off my working space and into the grass and brush where it remained hidden so I had to buy another nut. Stihl wouldn't take this back even with some depreciated amount. Oh, one more thing...I HATE this product. Worst purchase EVER!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good lightweight powerful saw I upgraded from the 16" 3/8 043 PM bar with the 61PMM3 chain to the 16" 3/8 050 PI bar with a 63PM3 chain to match the other bars and chains I already had. Initially have used the saw limbing and cutting up trees downed by hurricane Florence. Saw was very easy to start (just use the recommended sequence) and was impressed by the power. This saw was a replacement for my 1980's vintage 015 Stihl, and is more powerful and lighter. Went through 12" trunks (maple, pine, oak, gum) with ease and is very well balanced with the 16" bar for maneuvering when limbing. Very good on fuel consumption (especially compared to my MS310, another excellent saw). The two bolt bar mount is also a definite improvement over the one bolt configuration of the old 015.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from More saw than I need for around the house. Perfect size for small and medium jobs, excellent quality, dependability and ease of use. I bought it for Stihl's reputation, counting on this lasting a while.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely no complaints! This is a great little saw, I’ve been using it for around the home chores, and a bit of carving work... and I gotta say this lirtle guy makes quick work of many jobs. This is my fist real saw, and I fully asked way too many questions at my local dealer, but I feel as though I got all the info I possibly could get. The saw has been very reliable and I feel as though it’s been a good confidence builder in the Stihl brand.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small but can handle big jobs, use premium fuel that is non-ethanol For those that have had initial problems starting and keeping it running: I am not sure what gas you are using. But I had similar issues getting it to start and stay running initially (with low octane non-ethanol gas). Couple of tips. Use premium non-ethanol gas, and the Stihl oil additive. Also the air filter is bare-minimum and must be cleaned frequently. Those three things 1. High octane non-ethanol fuel, 2. Stihl oil additive to the fuel. 3. Keep the air filter clean. And the MS170 is like the mini-Cadillac of chain saws. Also trying to start it while the switch is in the off-position will instantly flood it, and it takes awhile for the fuel to burn off/evaporate or it wont start.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not live up to brand reputation. Bought on brand reputation. Just over one year old, incredibly difficult to start and restart. Won't be buying another Stihl.
